The two-channel video <Was I there at all> began with the question, 'Where does the power of imagination come from, and what are the strong and blurred associations between imagination and reality?' In the folk songs of the Jeju(Korea) Haenyeo women, Ieodo was an imaginary island of blood, believed to be home to family members who never returned from the sea. But as South Korea reclaimed its sovereignty and solidified its territorial waters, Ieodo became a real place with geopolitical coordinates. With the construction of a marine research center on a rock 4.6m below the surface, it became a visible presence on the surface and is now at the center of political and diplomatic conflicts in the East China Sea. Based on research on the islands, the film explores the duality of the islands, which have different identities in imagination and reality.

2채널 영상 <내가 정말 거기 있었을까>는 ‘상상을 현실의 세계 로 끌어오는 동력은 어디에서 나오는가? 그리고 상상과 실제는 어떤 연관으로 강하고 흐리게 연관되는가?’의 질문에서 시작했다. 제주해녀들의 민요에 등장하는 이어도는 바다에서 돌아오지 못한 가족이 산다고 믿는 상상 속의 피안의 섬이었다. 하지만 대한 민국이 주권을 되찾고 영해의 구역을 공고히하던 과정에서 이어 도는 지정학적 좌표를 가진 실제 장소가 되었다. 수면 아래 4.6 미터의 바위에 해양 연구센터가 건설되면서 수면 위의 가시적인 존재가 되었고, 현재는 동중국해의 정치,외교적 갈등의 중심에 서 있다. 이어도에 대한 리서치를 바탕으로 상상과 현실에서 다른 정체성을 가지는 ‘이어도’의 이중성을 탐구한다.
